Samantha Day: The Booby Trap
Review by: Samantha Pressdee
“Breasts loom large in our culture - buy why?”
‘Titologist’ Samantha Day gives us a warm welcome to her ‘Tit Academy’. We are lucky to be here, as 10 minutes before showtime her room at The City Cafe as part of Laughing Horse's Free Festival is already full and people have to be turned away. I get to play teachers pet, tearing a page out of my notebook so she can put a ‘Sold Out’ sign on the door.
Wearing colourful dungarees, a smile and hair in dreadlocks. Mrs Day begins the class. She talks about how connection with older women is important. She’s 54, but you wouldn't guess with her youthful appearance, perhaps thanks to her seventeen years sober. With her pixie-like energy she delivers wonderful material on body image, getting older and being a woman.
There are some dirty jokes as well as clever political takes. Her relaxed delivery and charming crowdwork, ensures the energy is kept light and fun. Our class is peppered with anecdotes about her family. Her daughter got through to the finals of the Love Island auditions, we learn of her sister's days as a Page 3 girl, along with some light hearted pops at her husband, Mr Day.
As our class moves towards conclusion, we realise we’ve been led up the garden path by a cheeky trickster. We are none the wiser in regards to the reason breasts loom large in our culture, but that’s ok!
An hour of mischief and mirth. We are tickled by this well structured show with hilarious visual gags, riveting story telling and excellent comedy writing. Us students rolling in laughter as Samantha builds up to a fun and interactive finale.
Highly recommend enrolling in Tit Academy, but be sure to arrive early as places are limited!
